5th day of Christmas
This year's Christmas Revels at Sanders Theater in Cambridge had an American theme. There were songs, recitations, stories, and dancing from several traditions: Native American, African American, Appalachian, and my favorite, the Shakers. The words in the above image are from the song, 'Tis the gift to be simple, which was sung by the children's chorus.
I love the way these images make themselves and find resonances. The circle just happened. The decision to include the Shaker quote with its reference to turning came next. The circle continued to grow into a Christmas ornament.
The image was created from a close-up photo of flowering quince which I brought in from the garden in early December and put in water. The flowers bloom a bright scarlet in the spring but the color of the forced blossoms is a pale peach. The blossoms with a string of small battery powered lights from Ikea brighten a corner of the bookcase.
