Two New Ventures in the World of eCommerce

I have embarked on two new adventures in selling on the web—a bookshop on my website and a store page on society6 which produces art as prints, cell phone cases, pillows, stationery, and more. I’ve been wanting to offer my published books in a more consistent way for a long time. I’ve also been watching these sites that put art on all kinds of items and have had a hankering to do so with something of mine. It’s a coincidence that it has all come together in this week of week of cyber selling promotion. Here’s a little about each and links.

THE BOOKSHOP

I use weebly drag and drop for my website which I love and have used for other websites as well. I find it very easy to use and like the clean look I can get with it. However I have found that there are limitations to its ecommerce store. Here’s a wee bit about why for those who are interested in such things. If you’re not, feel free to skip on down. Weebly gives the option for categories which I wanted to use. Mine are Books About Making Books for Children and Art Books and Catalogs. I wanted one page with both categories but that was not an option. Therefore, I had to do them as separate pages. Because I didn't want two items in the navigation bar, I had to create a drop down menu under bookshop. This means that there cannot be a direct link to the general title of Bookshop, but only to the two separate categories. To some degree they are separate markets so it is not awful but it would be better if I were able to share a link to Bookshop. Since I had been sending potential buyers offsite to amazon or etsy, I consider this to be a big improvement and am happy to share it with you.

Diamond Fold Books Workshop and Tutorial

Another great workshop at the Center for Creative Wholeness in Newbury, MA! We gathered together for a morning of bookmaking and made what I call Diamond Fold Books. They go by lots of names—origami, star, lotus—but I call them diamond fold since I most often taught them in schools in connection with geometry. I usually use all recycled paper for the books but since both sides of the paper show, we used unused copy paper for the pages and cereal boxes for the covers.

The first half was directed instruction with everyone following along as we worked step-by-step—

and the second half was play time. We had an array of collage papers, markers and gel pens, and quotes to add. Since it was close to Valentine's Day, many of the books were made as gifts and cards.

Entertaining Eight: Step Books

The First of the Workshop Paper Series

I gave a workshop on Friday at the Massachusetts Reading Association Conference. It was in the last block of sessions of the two-day conference and a perfect way to relax and unwind while learning. We were in an out-of-the-way location but those who made the trek were rewarded with an inviting room with round tables and a view of the lake at the Sturbridge Host Hotel. For the past two years I have made my handouts as pdfs to be downloaded. This offers the advantage of adding phtotographs and additional material that I would not have been able to put in printed handouts. I decided to make the pdfs available to all at the reasonable price of $2.95 each.
