In Celebration of the Ratification of the 19th Amendment

ELIZABETH CADY STANTON

born 1815 in Johnstown, New York
died 1902 in New York, New York

Elizabeth Cady Stanton was one of the key figures in women’s suffrage throughout her life. This quotation was part of her Keynote Address before the Woman’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York on July 19, 1848.

“The right is ours. Have it we must. Use it, we will. The pens, the tongues, the fortunes, the indomitable wills of many women are already pledged to secure this right. The great truth that no just government can be formed without the consent of the governed we shall echo and re-echo in the ears of the unjust judge, until by continual coming we shall weary him.”

This is one of the fourteen hand-lettered quotes in my new book, Suffragists Speak: Hand-Lettered Quotes To Celebrate The 100th Anniversary Of Women’s Right To Vote. Copies are available for purchase at my online bookstore: https://www.susangaylord.com/bookstore.html.

Talking About The Spirit Books

I am honored to have been chosen for the Jaffe Center for Book Arts' featured Artist of the Week short video. I talk about the process of making the Spirit Books in general and this one, Spirit Book # 90: Rising Certainty in particular. It's not long: five minutes, eighteen seconds to be exact. If you are interested, do take a look. The sooner the better. It's only there for viewing for the rest of the week.
