It's been a slow and gradual reentry into making Spirit Books again. I completed a new one earlier in the year and reworked some older ones so much that they were given new numbers and titles. This one has been waiting for one last bit of assembly and I completed it today.
Inspired by drilling holes in rocks and sea glass in my jewelry class, I bought a dremel tool like Lisa's. I'm always intimidated by new tools. It took me several months to finally use this one to drill eight small holes in the birch bark to assemble the cradle for the the book.
I've named the book Sheltering Flight. I get a sense of flight from the way the book is perched on the cradle. According to J.C. Cooper in An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Traditional Symbols, the birch is a tree that offers protection against evil spirits. Since I had already used protection in another title, I looked for a word other than protective. The online thesaurus provided sheltering.
