My 65th year concludes on September 17 when I turn 65. This will be my last post in the series. I don’t think I’m finished writing about my work, but I am done with my thoughts and feelings leading up to this birthday. I have come up with a plan to mark the occasion and the rest of my 65th year will be devoted to that.
I want to celebrate my change in attitude over the past year and my gratitude and appreciation for having been able to spend the last 38 years as an artist. I want to put to rest any disappointments and regrets. I’m not sure where it comes from but I have always felt that I had something to prove. To move on, I feel I need to prove to myself that I have nothing left to prove. I need to acknowledge the past so I can free myself for the future.
I am doing so by having an Open Studio Celebration on my birthday which conveniently falls on a Saturday this year. I will be showing work from my earliest days in calligraphy up to the present in my studio and throughout the first floor of our home. This will not be a formal exhibition in any way. I won’t be framing anything that is currently unframed. I’ll be tacking things up on walls, windows, and shelves. I’ll be sharing calligraphy pieces from the late ‘70s on including samples of commercial work as well as art pieces, calligraphy and photocopier work, greeting cards over the years, Childbirth Journey, my Notan Press books, the Spirit Books and their precursor the Spirit Boxes, and more. There will be things for sale but that is not the focus. This is first and foremost a celebration. I invite you all to come and join me. I will share more details closer to the date as well as the process of getting ready and then the event itself for those who are interested but cannot attend. I hope this will be the time that I truly let myself

So cool, wish I could come celebrate with you. I turn 65 in a couple of weeks. I haven't thought much about it till the last two weeks. Except from a healthcare perspective. Today I realized I might have to hire someone to do some stuff that I can't do anymore and that made me realize I was changing! Hope your birthday brings you joy and wishes.
