Studio Sunday-Making Gifts

My mother-in-law has two hives in her garden. I wanted to make a special presentation for the honey she shares. I found twelve jars with hives on the front at the Container Store and made these medallions from Model Magic and a mold from House on the Hill to tie onto the jars. I was inspired by the Valentine pieces they were making during my visit to the Museum at Texas Tech last February. Thank to Jill Hoffman for sending me the directions.

Susan: I wanted to suggest another medium for these molds: toilet paper. You fold it back and forth around your four fingers about 30 times, slip it off, get it completely wet and press it very firmly into every part of the mold's face. Then tear the wet edge around the perimeter of the mold (it will give a deckled appearance)and heat it in the microwave for a minute (or possibly two--check to see).

When finished it will pop right off and have a lovely, fragile appearance---very smooth along the face and raised into the depressions. (It is not durable, but can be secured by a stitch or double-faced tape depending on your application.)

Toilet paper gives a much more delicate result than cotton linter which tends to clump.

I love reading your nightly messages---around 10 or 11pm here in the Midwest. Thank you for sharing your art and your life with all of us.
