A Spirit Book usually starts with a cradle. I then decide on the paper and the size. I tear the pages and begin working on them. In my jewelry class last year I fell in love with the transformation of wire from round to flat. I tried using spiral pieces modeled after one I made for a necklace but found that they overwhelmed the stitching. Instead I surrounded beads with circles of flattened brass wire and made them the center of spirals stitched with gold thread. I'm about a third of way through the pages which will rest in a cradle of bittersweet.

Susan, your work is extraordinary; I love your Spirit Book series, and am thrilled to have found your blog. The new Spirit Books will no doubt speak volumes (no pun intended). I'm particularly fond of the cotton pods you used; my grandmother used to collect them for the holiday wreaths she made from cones and other natural materials.
