Illustrated Talk at Newburyport Public Library, 12.5

I am very excited to be giving an illustrated talk at the Newburyport Public Library on Thursday, December 5 at 7 PM. Here is the information from the library:

Art Lessons: Reflections From an Artist's Life, an illustrated talk by Susan Kapuscinski Gaylord, will be presented at the Newburyport Public Library on Thursday, December 5 at 7 PM. The Newburyport artist shares her work and her thoughts about a life of artistic commitment. Susan describes her entry into the world of visual art through calligraphy, her transition into book arts, her deep connection to the natural world, and her struggles to represent that bond in her work. She discusses the role of patience, the development of the critical eye, the struggle with perfection, and the idea that an artist's best teacher is the work itself. For further information contact Kat Wilson at the NPL (978.465.4428, kwilson@mvlc.org)

I start with my childhood growing up in a creative house that was full of making but with no natural ability to draw—in fact I loved my coloring books.

I move on to my discovery of, and early work in, calligraphy,

Childbirth Journey, the first work I considered truly my own,

bookmaking with photocopier imagery,

the pull of natural materials and the years of experimenting that led to the Spirit Books, and

the enjoyment of digital composition.

If you are in the area, please join me. I'll also have a table display of work through the years.

Download the flyer here. Feel free to share it with friends and colleagues.
